A hulking straphanger allegedly incensed over a seat he wanted on a crowded D-train senselessly stabbed another rider to death in front of horrified passengers in Midtown early today, police said.
A train conductor quickly sealed the doors, locking in the suspect until police arrived at the northbound 7th Av platform around 2 a.m..

A man was arrested after allegedly stabbing another man to death in a subway train in Manhattan earlier today.
Police say the 37-year-old suspect stabbed a 36-year-old man multiple times in the neck and face during an argument on a northbound D train at the Seventh Avenue station around 2 a.m.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
His alleged attacker was arrested at the station and charges are pending.

Now there's a movement afoot to create one for TTC riders.
In a week punctuated by token hoarding, a fare hike and a six-hour subway disruption comes the suggestion that a transit users' union is the better way to represent riders' frustrations and interests.

The first phase of a plan to improve transit service to York University in north-end Toronto was inaugurated this morning.
A ceremony was held to mark the end of construction for a busway to the university from the Downsview subway station.
The $38-million right-of-way for buses is designed to shave seven minutes off a 20-minute trip between the station and the university.

A SCARBOROUGH mum says she was left in the cold after being unable to board a bus in the town centre.
Wendy Carter and 14-week-old son Jenson had hoped to get on the Cayton bus after a shopping trip in the town centre.
But the bus that arrived at 1pm had steps, not a low floor, and Wendy was unable to get her pram on board.

The Toronto Transit Commission approved on Tuesday a fare hike which will take effect Jan. 3, 2010.
The increase adopts the recommendation made by the transit's staff on Nov. 4.
Under the approved fare, the increase would range from 25 cents for adult cash fare to $3.95 for a Greater Toronto Area pass.

The road construction that spurred yesterday's TTC meltdown was done at the request of the City of Toronto and after city hall issued a permit to do it, Enbridge said today.
"A contractor was conducting emergency work for Enbridge to relocate a natural gas pipeline at the request of the City of Toronto. This is relatively standard work in the city," said Debbie Boukydis, director of public and government affairs of Enbridge.
